AER LINGUS
Aer Lingus has been the national airline of Ireland since 1936, operating to 22 international and four domestic destinations including six US gateways. Domestic and UK provincial routes are served by Aer Lingus Commuter, its recently merged regional associate of the Irish flag-carrier operating between 15 British and Irish airports. The airline is the 38th largest regional airline in the world using BAe 146s and Fokker 50 aircraft. It also provides cargo services. Its alliance in the One World partnership is a great asset for the airline. Aer Lingus's transatlantic Premier Business Class service has a complimentary chauffeur-drive service. All passengers traveling Premier Business Class on Aer Lingus transatlantic routes can take advantage of a complimentary chauffeur service at airports of departure and arrival in Ireland, the UK and the US. This service is provided within a 50-mile radius of any Irish airport served by Aer Lingus, and a 40-mile radius of all its gateway airports in the UK and US. Passengers can arrange for it when booking a flight. The relaxed mood, decent, often traditional Irish food (try the corned beef and cabbage) and free drinks in the Economy class more than atone for the crowded conditions.

The airline's business-class food presentation format depicts the colors of the four seasons (spring - yellow, summer - blue, autumn - mustard, winter - wine), which is reflected on items such as menu covers and napkins. In-flight features include a wider choice of aperitifs, a greater variety of entrees (featuring freshly baked bread by Roly's), a vegetarian option and a lighter option meal. Eastbound flights offer a "quick dining" option. On all transatlantic flights, there is a selection of herbal teas and decaffeinated coffee, and on eastbound flights, hot chocolate. Executive Chef, Paddy Kelly, and his team have worked with a number of famous Irish based restaurateurs to develop a diverse range of dishes for you to choose from. The participating restaurateurs are: Darina Allen of Ballymaloe Cookery School, Patrick Guilbaud of Restaurant Patrick Guilbaud, Daniel Mullane of the Mustard Seed.

The seats are not as spacious as some, but even so, many passengers feel that Aer Lingus is the way to fly to Ireland, thanks to courteous, cheerful service that typifies Irish hospitality. The airline is also installing a new entertainment system, and there is great shopping when you depart from Shannon Airport.

AEROFLOT RUSSIAN AIRLINES
The Russian national carrier operating international and domestic passenger services to 139 destinations in 93 different countries, including four in the former Soviet Union, with commercial flights to 150 foreign destinations. Aeroflot accounts for 20% of the air travel in Russia. The Aeroflot management is aware of the shortcomings and recognizes the need to come up to Western standards, and there are now some signs of improvement. In the last five years, the airline has started to operate Western aircraft supplied by Airbus and Boeing, improving on-time performance, reliability and safety.

Passenger services are also improving on international flights, though more slowly on national flights. Still an airline to use only if there is nothing else available, the Russians have a lot to learn about running an airline if passenger criticisms are any indication. Practically all aspects come under fire: poor punctuality, bad service, substandard food, unreliable equipment -- particularly engines and avionics (aviation electronics). Internal flights are often operated by very old and uncomfortable aircraft in a questionable state of repair. For many, once with Aeroflot is enough, but on some routes there is no other choice.

AEROMEXICO
Main Mexican international carrier providing scheduled international services to destinations in the USA, in Europe and South America, and domestic destinations. Aeromexico has teamed up with the Sky Team global airline alliance to offer passengers the best options in destinations and routes, and operates over 300 flights per day.

Aeromexico flies to practically any part of the world, because in addition to its 47 destinations in Mexico and the United States, and the 696 cities reached by its system of alliances with other airlines in Mexico, the United States, Europe, and South America, the airline can also offer more than a 1,400 destinations through its network of connecting flights. Aeromexico alliances offer you the possibility of accruing and redeeming Premier Miles, as well as access to the VIP lounges of some of its partners.

For best service, try their Class Premier business class on 767 aircraft and enjoy 140 degree recline, personal video and telephone. On other flights the airline offers Video Walkmans with a selection of movies. The food is prepared by renowned chef Thierry Blouet has combined his experience and quality to offer an exquisite selection of gastronomic delights. The founder of "Cafe des Artistes" in Puerto Vallarta, one of the best restaurants in the world, Thierry Blouet was awarded the rank of Maitre Cuisinier in France in February 2000. This title distinguishes him as one of an exclusive group of culinary professionals and ambassador of French cuisine throughout the world. He is also a member of the Academie Culinaire de France. The dishes created by Thierry Blouet for the airline's "Suns and Spices" menu are perfectly complemented by striking dinnerware bearing the pre-Hispanic motif of the hummingbird. Symbolizing Aeromexico's passion for flight, the hummingbird accompanies travelers in this memorable in-flight experience. The meal would not be complete without the most traditional and famous Mexican beverage -- Tequila -- whose taste, color and flavor are so representative of the culture.

AIR CANADA
Canada's flagship air carrier operates and extensive route network, which, including its regional airline, provides flights to 150 destinations worldwide. Air Canada is part of the Star Alliance airline partnership offering 700 destinations in 120 countries. It acquired its main national competitor, Canadian Airlines, in 2000 and integrated its destinations and fleet into its own during 2001. Air Canada Jazz was recently created, and while new, it is born out of the union of Air Canada's regional airlines -- Air BC, Air Nova, Air Ontario, and Canadian Regional Airlines -- bringing together millions of Canadians for decades.

The airline offers a series of interesting travel services for the passenger. Electronic Ticket Easy, its efficient, electronic ticketing, is the timesaving, ticket less way to travel. Rapidair, for travelers in Canada's major business regions, offers superior service and convenience. Rapidair is available between Toronto-Montreal-Ottawa and provides the convenience of more flights every business day, plus dedicated Rapidair check-ins and gates. Upgrade certificates will let you treat yourself to the comfort of Executive Class. The Roadpost Cell Phone Program is great if you need to stay connected by cell phone when traveling overseas. The Canadian flag carrier provides an efficient, comfortable, bilingual, on-time service, and although some find the attitude of the attendants a bit cold, to most it's clean-cut and reliable, just like Canada. Although there are sometimes complaints about luggage mess-ups and high prices, overall it is a fine operation.

Executive First Service, Air Canada's business class, offers its most comfortable seats on the 747-400, 767-300ER and A340, with a separate cabin and guaranteed window or aisle seat, designated washrooms, electronic seat controls -- lumbar support, leg rest extension and recline -- oversized pillows and blankets, complimentary gender-specific amenity kits including sockettes, eye shades, dental kit, shave kit. In-flight entertainment includes: electronic headsets, individual armrest video screens featuring 8 video and 9 audio channels, an individual reading light, Nintendo games on A340/A330 aircraft, Sony Passport System (on A340, A330), 72 hours of fully digital entertainment on demand with a large 8.3in/21cm screen. Laptop power ports are available on select aircraft, and at select seats, and personal communication service is available within arms reach of each passenger.

Hospitality Service, the economy class, features pillows and blankets, tray table at each seat, and an individual reading light. The in-flight entertainment includes and audio channel selector with complimentary headsets, a main screen video (on A330, A340, 767, 747) with feature films on flights over four and a half hours, compilation of short features on flights over 3 hours 30 minutes, and short features on flights over two hours. Laptop power ports are also available on select aircraft and at select seats, and again, personal communication service is available.

AIR CHINA
Air China is the largest airline on the mainland, operating most of P.R. of China's international and domestic flights from its base at Beijing Capital Airport. The carrier flies 44 international and regional routes linking 29 cities in 19 countries. Air China has won several international awards, including an Honorary Medal from ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization), and the Five-Star Diamond Award from the American Academy of Restaurant and Hospitality Sciences for its achievements in flight safety, courtesy and quality of operation. The airline has just introduced a nonsmoking policy.

AIR FRANCE
Air France is one of the world's leading airlines and third ranking for international passengers, operating flights to 214 destinations in 91 countries, also providing an extensive domestic network. The airline is the result of a merger of all government owned French airlines: Air France, Air Inter, Air Charter and UTA; all operations were combined in the 1990's. Air France is a founding member of the Sky Team, the global alliance with major hubs on all four continents.

The airline has a confusing class and service structure, offering the following classes of service segmented by short, medium, and long haul.

On short-haul flights, Air France's Continental France network ensures daily frequencies at any time from the first to the last flight. L'Espace Affaires, Business Class, offers comfortable, wide seats (only 2 seats per row) with a leather partition table, free champagne or orange juice as you board, and meals that are served depending on flight departure time and duration. Tempo Challenge and Tempo, Economy Class flights, offer hot drinks and croissants on all morning flights, light meals or sandwiches at mealtimes, drinks and snacks on other flights. La Navette, domestic shuttle, serves breakfast, light lunch and dinner, snacks throughout the day, free refreshments. Air France By is a partnership between Air France and other airlines flying in France and Europe; Air France and SNCF (French Railway Company) make your trip easier by offering a single rate on your Plane and Train itinerary, reserve and buy your air and rail tickets together.

The Air France medium-haul network is among the most extensive between France and Europe, Israel, Syria, Jordan, and North Africa. Guaranteed are connections, reduced time, and multiple partner destinations. Medium-haul's L'Espace Affaires, Business Class, offers comfortable, wide seats (only 2 per row) with a leather partition table, free champagne or orange juice as you board, warm or cold meals served depending on flight departure time and duration. Tempo Challenge Economy Class has warm or cold meals served depending on departure time and flight duration, all drinks are free, including champagne, wine, aperitifs and liquor, while Tempo Economy Class serves sandwiches and croissants served on flights under 1h30, warm dish and a large selection of drinks offered on board. Thalys, the high speed train, enables travel from Brussels-Midi station to Roissy/Charles-de-Gaulle airport TGV station with a combined train and plane ticket on an international or domestic flight. Passengers travel first class on the Thalys, regardless of the tariff paid for the overall trip.

Air France's long-haul network includes over 180 destinations to the Americas, Asia, Africa, Middle-East, Caribbean, and points in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. L'Espace Premiere, First Class, offers wide ergonomic seats that convert to real beds, a removable screen ensures your privacy. Seats also feature telephones, videos, noise-compensating headsets, optical fiber lamps. L'Espace Affaires, Business Class, has custom menus enhanced with choice wines, a traditional menu or a faster meal; on flights over nine and a half hours, the passenger decides when he wants to eat, and on flights over ten and a half hours, a buffet-bar is open. Espace Affaires Caribbean and Indian Ocean offers modular seats with silent remote control, 131 degree reclining back, 4-position headrest, adjustable leg and footrests, 2 pillows, and individual video screens, noise-compensating headsets, and individual cold-light lamps. Meals are tasty and full-flavored. Warm dishes are enhanced by fine wines. Alize, Economy Class when traveling to the Caribbean and Indian Ocean, has a welcome punch, drinks, warm towels, choice of traditional or Creole meals, wine and champagne in a comfortable cabin; Tempo, Economy Class, has seats with 118 degree reclining, a pillow and cover, and offers a courtesy aperitif, French regional cuisine or other world-famous cuisines, a large selection of drinks, including champagne, and on flights over ten and a half hours, a self-service buffet is open.

Of course, in a class by itself is Concorde. Air France and British Airways resumed Concorde SST service from Paris and London to New York Kennedy on November 7, 2001. The new schedule includes boosting Concorde service between New York JFK and Paris from five times weekly. The world's fastest civil aircraft, both in the air and on the ground, Concorde is the only aircraft that lets you arrive in New York before you leave Paris. From 250mph on takeoff to a cruising speed of 1350mph, Concorde takes you through the sound barrier to travel at twice the speed of sound flying on the edge of space, at 60,000ft/18,000m above the ground. Meals successfully combine French culinary traditions with originality, and the wine list offers a choice of prestigious, vintage wines and champagne and caviar. On the Paris-New York flight, a new menu offers a choice of two hors d'oeuvres, three elegant dishes including a vegetarian dish, a selection of cheeses, fruit and pastries.

Opinions vary greatly regarding the French flag-carrier. Some are offended by the air of indifferent disdain among the flight attendants, who seem to regard passengers as an annoying inconvenience, but others seem to be captivated by the Gallic charm of the personnel, and by the civilized and attentive service. Overall, if you opt for Air France, it will prove to be a very good choice, offering better than average food and wines and the best selection of flights to and from Paris. As for the Concorde, one word: "incroyable" (incredible)! It should be mentioned that Air France has been undergoing a major restructuring, and many steps to improve standards have been implemented. One can feel "la" difference.

AIR INDIA
India's international flag carrier with a network of passenger services serving 44 domestic and international cities.

Air-India now has on its 747-400 aircraft in-flight Sky Phone, in addition to the food, the wines, the champagnes and the choicest liqueurs, and in-flight entertainment programs selected on the basis of passenger feedback. Colognes, moisturizers and after shave lotions for in-flight use are available in the toilets. Medicines for treatment of minor discomforts are available. Toys and games are available for children up to the age of 12 yrs. Books and comics are also available. Special assistance for babies and infants is available on request.

Air-India gives you the flexibility to plan your own meal. Choose from our array of 23 special meals. Meticulously pre-planned, to appeal to elite First and Executive Class passengers, gourmet meals include a choice of Indian vegetarian and non-vegetarian and Continental vegetarian and non-vegetarian cuisine, all served in exquisite Royal Doulton bone-china crockery, with the touch of Indian hospitality the nation is known for. New tastes are offered on flights to an exotic destination, so whether its Thailand or the Gulf, passengers can look forward to an irresistible feast. There is nothing quite like a little exotic mystery to enhance the delicious taste of a gourmet meal, so to their menu of the rich curries of traditional Indian cuisine and the delectable Severuga Caviar of Europe, they added a touch of Arabia, a whiff of the Far East, and the spirit of Europe.

While admirers view this airline as different, personal and spirited, they're outvoted by critics who warn that there can sometimes be long delays, bad odors and discomfort. On the plus side, service is friendly and meals can be excellent, but, of course, to appreciate them fully, you must like Indian food. European food of sorts is available for those who prefer. Comfort standards are generally good, and schedules outside India are usually closely adhered to.

AIR JAMAICA
Since the airline was founded in 1969, a lot has changed, as it went from a foreign-owned airline to Jamaican ownership, and was eventually privatized and "reborn" into the most modern and efficient fleet in the Caribbean. It operates scheduled services from Kingston and Montego Bay to over 15 destinations in the Caribbean, the USA and UK. Air Jamaica also offers flights to Toronto under a joint-service agreement with Air Canada.

Air Jamaica Express links the main island to other destinations in the Caribbean, with service to Montego Bay, Negril, Port Antonio, Kingston and Ocho Rios. The airline has the 7th Heaven Program, fly seven round trips on Air Jamaica and get the next one free.

Air Jamaica has emerged as the Caribbean's leader in offering an unparalleled variety of services such as their Red Carpet Services with great local food and hospitality. Variety is what sets Jamaica apart from other Caribbean destinations -- its topography, its people, its vast array of hotels and resorts, and especially its diverse sports activities. Many of today's travelers enjoy interspersing leisure and relaxation with exploration, exercise, and even a bit of friendly competition. The airline also has an impeccable safety record.

AIR NEW ZEALAND
New Zealand's flag carrier focusing on Australasia and the South Pacific, with services from Europe, North America and Asia to New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific Islands. Air New Zealand National provides regional service. The airline is part of the Star Alliance.

The First Class cabin, complete with aromatherapy kit, offers contour sleeper seats, food service with the finest wines from New Zealand and Australia, and world-class cuisine prepared by acclaimed chefs from around the world. Top this off with a movie on an individual Sony Video Watchman, an after-dinner drink, or simply stretch out with a lamb's wool blanket.

Air New Zealand also has a newly renovated Business Class. Onboard, three's a friendly Business-Class staff with a cabin offering plenty of room and solitude for concentration and relaxation. The new seats, provide a full recline, adjustable lumbar support, and oversize pillows for added comfort. Enjoy brasserie-style cuisine accompanied by award-winning wines.

The airline has abandoned the idea of economy class. They have created a new model for main-cabin travel based on comfort, service and value: Pacific Class, a new standard for the airline industry, with a new advanced main cabin seat, the Spacemaker, with a large comfort zone affording a generous personal space.

Chefs from around the world were tapped to create a modern, cosmopolitan cuisine unique to Air New Zealand, complemented by a range of award-winning international wines. If you need a little distraction for the kids, the airline offers a Warner Brothers Children's Pack loaded with all the familiar Looney Tunes characters, like Bugs Bunny, Tweety Bird, Marvin the Martian and the Road Runner. It is worth noting that the airline has an excellent safety record.

An air of quiet efficiency reigns from takeoff to touchdown, and the airline enjoys a good reputation. Everything functions as it should, the food is excellent, and the airline has won a string of awards as the provider of the best wines. Onboard service is efficient, though perhaps a few more smiles would be welcome.

AIRTRAN AIRWAYS
Operates over 275 daily departures to 30 cities throughout the eastern United States and the Midwest including over 130 daily departures from Atlanta Hartfield. The airline started as Conquest Sun Airlines, merged with ValuJet Airlines in 1997, and was renamed AirTran. The airline has undergone a successful modernization of its fleet of older DC-9 replacing them with the new Boeing 717.

It operates in low fare and full service flights. Although as basic as you can get, its aircraft are usually crowded, and seating is very tight.

ALASKA AIRLINES
For nearly 70 years, Alaska Airlines has been a major carrier operating scheduled air services to 35 cities in the US and seven international destinations in Canada and Mexico. The network is further expanded through sister company Horizon Air.

One of the highest-rated U.S. carriers, this West Coast regional serves a limited market well and is truly fun to fly thanks to friendly, folksy flight attendants. A few critics feel it's starting to rest on its laurels and they say that recent belt-tightening has meant space tightening too, but given sparklingly clean planes, punctuality, and food you actually want to eat, it's a great choice.

ALITALIA
National carrier of Italy, operating flights to domestic and international destinations from bases at Rome and Milan.

The airline joined the SkyTeam alliance, and including the airline's partnership agreements, up to 400 destinations across five continents are available. Delta and Alitalia has begun code sharing on 11 nonstop transatlantic flights immediately and will offer code share service on more than 500 flights, including some beyond their hubs, as of Dec. 1, 2001.

The SkyTeam carriers' agreement will allow Delta customers to buy seats on Alitalia's seven transatlantic flights from six US gateways to Milan and Rome. Alitalia Express provides regional services in Europe. Opinions about this airline vary greatly. Some people object to the smoking, still allowed on some flights.

Alitalia's new International Business Class is called Magnifica Class. (From Milan to Bombay, Caracas, Lagos, Accra and Dubai, passengers will be flying Coral class until the airline has finished installing its new Magnifica Class on these flights.) Magnifica offers the "Capri" armchair seat with a pitch of 55in/140cm, cloth upholstery with leather trim, electronically controlled reclining seat back and adjustable footrest, hand-regulated back support, headphone socket, satellite telephones. Magnifica Class is available on MD-11, 767 and 747 aircraft.

The airline's Prima Class/Business Class is available on shorter flights. On the A320 and A321 planes, passengers enjoy armchair seats called "Camaleonte", with wider upholstery and more space for carryon luggage. The layout has been reduced from six to five seats per row to give more space on board. On the MD-80, the cabin is fitted with "Sorrento" armchair seats, two rows of two, side by side. These comfortable seats are equipped with adjustable headrests and back supports, and have ample legroom as well as wide armrests. And the A320 and A321 flights offer comedy shows and music.

Cabin crews tend to be either charming or rude. Some passengers enjoy the carefree Italian ambiance, while others feel it is more like a cattle transport. As strikes are fairly common in Italy, travelers going there should check the newspapers first to see if there is, or is going to be, a problem that could affect their plans.

ALL NIPPON AIRWAYS
ANA is the World's tenth largest airline, operating 143 scheduled domestic and international routes, with over 500 flight operations per day within Japan and nearly 300 flights per week internationally to 30 destinations on four continents.

The airline joined the Star Alliance in 1999. Travelers should try this very accommodating Japanese airline, whose nonstop U.S. service links Tokyo with New York, Washington, DC, and Los Angeles. All Nippon is considered professional and dependable, offering magnificent service, cleaner, newer planes and the ultimate in meal quality.

ANA's First Class section provides comfortable flat seats with 83-inch (211cm) pitch, but these are not available on all flights. With almost seven feet of space before and behind your seat, there is ample room to move, even if the seat in front is fully reclined. Taste the Japanese cuisine; seasonal flavors and fresh ingredients are the heart of the popular kaiseki-style meals in First Class, and this menu is not only delicious, but a visual work of art!

Club ANA business passengers are offered ANA Super Style, a service designed to help them conduct business while in the air. The bar counter on 747 aircraft offers a full range of beverages-including over ten types of soft drinks and a selection of wines, as well as light snacks. It is also a great place to socialize or talk business. (777-200ER aircraft features a self-service bar.) There is also an exclusive space equipped with phone, fax and electrical outlets for PCs -- a virtual "flying office" that lets you maximize your valuable time before reaching your destination. The ergonomically designed Super Relax Seats in Club ANA (not available on all flights) have a 50in/127cm pitch and 45 degree recline inviting travelers to read, sleep or just relax in total comfort. Local foods and sake from Setonaikai, Suishin in Okayama, Hiroshima, Kagawa, and Ehime regions facing the islands of Setonaikai (the inland sea), where the ample fauna and flora make for a rich cuisine. The milder climate is conducive to a cuisine with light, quieter tastes that contrast nicely with the robust full flavors of the cuisines in neighboring regions in Chugoku/Shikoku, on the coasts of the Pacific and Japan Seas, where the climate is harsher. The lighter Setonaikai cuisine is enjoyed best with Suishin, a specialty sake from Hiroshima known for its smooth, lightly sour aroma.

ANA's Economy Class seating provides roomier-than-average seats with footrests, 34 inch pitch and 34 degree recline. More seat space -- coupled with an enhanced recline system -- mean significantly greater comfort. Footrests are available only on ANA operated transpacific flights between Tokyo and New York, Washington, D.C., Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles. The meals are Japanese, European or western style, and are all very good. The main course may be braised beef and chicken with sauce Lyonnaise, or alfonsino (fish) with Pastis-flavored cream sauce, or beef Sukiyaki with rice, or seafood and pasta with curry sauce, or a Chinese style braised pork and vegetables all served with salad and dessert. The airline provides a free Sky Porter service available to all full-fare outbound ANA passengers flying international routes.

ALOHA AIRLINES
Aloha provides scheduled services within the Hawaiian islands and to the US Trust Territories in the Pacific. For 56 years, the airline has served the State of Hawaii with dependable and friendly air service.

Aloha's unique brand of transpacific flying aboard comfortable, quiet next-generation Boeing 737-700 aircraft now serves Oakland, Orange County, Burbank and Sacramento in California, Las Vegas, Nevada; Phoenix, Arizona, and Vancouver, Canada. Aloha also flies to Rarotonga in the Cook Islands in the South Pacific and destinations in the Central Pacific, including Majuro in the Marshall Islands.

For those seeking the hidden Hawaii, Aloha operates frequent interisland flights weekly aboard Boeing jets between Honolulu and the main destinations of Lihue, Kauai; Kahului, Maui; and Hilo and Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. Aloha's sister airline, Island Air, provides daily service between Honolulu and smaller airports on Maui, Molokai and Lanai. For business passengers, a modern Suite 737 lounge offers complimentary beverages and a variety of business amenities.

"Onboard Services" magazine presented Aloha with a Diamond Award, the highest honor in the competition's Airline In-Flight Services category. The accolade comes as Aloha is marking the third anniversary of its successful transpacific flying program, which began February 14, 2000, with nonstops between Honolulu and Oakland in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Aloha's transpacific strategy has been to operate as a boutique airline in a niche market. The business niche is based on the demand for convenient departures to Hawaii from smaller, more customer-friendly airports like Burbank and Oakland, in order to avoid congested, delay-plagued airports like Los Angeles and San Francisco International.

While some airlines cut costs on meals, Aloha has kept up its commitment to serve the highest quality, best tasting food in the air. In fact, few U.S. airlines go to such great lengths to ensure a First Class dining experience.

Passengers experience the Spirit of Aloha and the warmth of the Islands the moment they step aboard. Aloha's state-of-the-art Boeing 737-700s are configured with 12 seats in First Class and 112 in coach. The seats are covered in leather and passengers are happy to find there is extra legroom. With only 12 seats in First Class, everyone up front is a V-VIP. In Coach class, the pitch is a comfortable 33-inches.

Aloha's Enhanced Coach service includes a complimentary mai tai. Instead of peanuts or pretzels, Aloha serves chocolate-covered macadamia nuts. Flight attendants provide each passenger in coach with an individually wrapped oshibori towel to refresh the face and clean the hands. Headsets are always free and audio channels include a variety of sounds from Hawaiian-style to pop, classical and jazz. The features of the in-flight service - beverage and meal service, audio and video programming - are spread evenly through the flight. The schedule is relaxed, not rushed.

While some airlines cut costs on meals, Aloha has kept up its commitment to serve the highest quality, best tasting food in the air. In fact, few U.S. airlines go to such great lengths to ensure a First Class dining experience.

Aloha began its quest for excellence by recruiting Master Chef Alan Wong as consulting chef for its First Class service. Wong is a James Beard Foundation Best Chef for the Pacific Northwest and his Honolulu restaurant, Alan Wong's, was named No. 6 in Gourmet's list of "America's 50 Best Restaurants." More recently, "The Honolulu Advertiser" proclaimed Alan Wong's as "Hawaii's Best Restaurant."

A founding member of Hawaii Regional Cuisine, Chef Wong has created in- flight menus that showcase fresh Island ingredients and culinary influences from Hawaii, Asia and the Pacific Rim.

AMERICA WEST AIRLINES
America West provides an extensive scheduled services network to more than 50 destinations in 37 states and nine international routes to points in Canada and Mexico.

The airline is doing well since emerging from bankruptcy in 1994. It operates in low-fare and full-service flights. Its aircraft are always crowded, and seating is tight. Audio and video entertainment is available on most 757, A320 and A319 aircraft. For a nominal entertainment fee of $5, passengers enjoy a variety of programs including: Music Zone videos, short-subject television programs, movies, and a variety of audio music channels.

In many markets, America West's fares are now as much as 80 percent below those of their competitors. Independent airline industry analysts have described America West's new fare structure as "a welcome change," "a big difference" and "a huge structural change that will have a major impact." A leading travel publication recently called it "fantastic" and "good for consumers." The airline provides affordable transportation with few frills.

As for food, take your own lunch. The airline, along with its America West Express regional arm, operates out of the twin hubs of Phoenix and Las Vegas, and code shares with Continental Airlines and to a lesser extent with Northwest Airlines. America West is bringing back in-flight food, at least on some routes. Menus have been modified to lower costs. But passengers generally appreciate good connections, and good, if sometimes erratic, service.

AMERICAN AIRLINES
American is the second-largest airlines on the globe with a worldwide network of scheduled services to more than 160 cities. The airline launched the Oneworld alliance with British Airways in 1998 and became the first airline to offer electronic ticketing though out its entire worldwide network. American Airlines acquired Reno Air in 1998 and Trans World Airlines in 2001.

Say so long to TWA and to it's JFK terminal, as American Airlines integrates TWA into the corporate fold, there's no need to field flights from the historic structure anymore and it is accelerating, construction of its new terminal at JFK. The 17-gate midfield concourse is now slated to be up and running by June 2003, six months sooner than originally projected. This good old standby remains one of the best domestic carriers; predictable and businesslike.

The "More Room Throughout Coach" initiative has created more coach passenger space on a major carrier than at any time since the deregulation of the airline industry more than 20 years ago. 7,200 seats in total were removed on the fleet's more than 700 jet aircraft (about 6.4 percent of coach capacity), expanding the space in the airline's coach cabins from the present industry standard of 31 and 32 inches to a predominant level of 33 and 35 inches of space. "More Room Throughout Coach" was also incorporated into the newly acquired TWA fleet. All 165 TWA aircraft are now flying with more coach passenger space.

Its international operations have greatly improved since the introduction of the larger 777s (try the new seats in their 777 flagship suites) replacing the 767s on most of its flights to overseas hubs to provide better passenger comfort and service.

"More Room" in Business Class cabins (on transcontinental and international flights) means a 20 percent increase of space with an expansive 60 inches of personal area versus the industry standard of 48 to 50 inches. Business class seats also feature a telephone and modem connection linked by satellite communications, an individual power port, a personal reading lamp and electric lumbar support and leg/foot rests.

First-class cabins now feature the ultimate amenities and services for a relaxed, comfortable flying experience. First class sleeper seats have everything that business class seats offer plus a personal in-seat TV monitor, an individual reading light and -- only on American Airlines -- a specially designed swivel seat which allows passengers to turn in their seats and hold actual seated, face-to-face conversations. In addition, when ready for some well deserved R&R, the seat can be adjusted to a fully flat sleeping position.

For medical attention and support, American has even taken steps to provide the best care possible for personal in-flight emergencies. The first airline to do so, all of American Airlines and American Eagle's aircraft carry automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) and enhanced medical kits to help handle medical emergencies on board. TWA aircraft are also equipped with AEDs. American's SkyCare program provides skilled medical companions for travelers who need limited medical attention or care during their flight. Registered nurses, usually flight nurses with advanced medical experience, training and certifications, are available to accompany passengers on certain domestic flights.

American flies just about everywhere, is often on time and treats frequent fliers well. Critics contend that cost-cutting has made this once-great airline lackluster, citing declining service, little leg room, and food that leaves a lot to be desired, but for the majority, it's still a solid choice.

AMERICAN TRANS AIR
Started in 1973, ATA is North America's largest charter airline operates scheduled and charter flights and these are run out of Chicago-Midway and Indianapolis. ATA and Chicago Express launched Trans Air Connection linking mid-western cities to its Chicago hub. The airline offers low faires and integrated tour packages and is a no-nonsense operator of flights mainly crowded by vacationers or charter passengers.

ASIANA AIRLINES
Second designated Korean carrier operating to 13 domestic destinations on 17 routes and 44 international destinations in 12 countries. Asiana Airlines is preparing for membership in the Star Alliance in time to help mark Star's 5th anniversary in May 2002. Integration into the alliance, currently comprising 13 full members and 15 brands, including Lauda Air and Tyrolean under the Austrian Airlines Group umbrella, is a lengthy, complex procedure of up to 18 months. As an Asian carrier, Asiana realizes the importance of providing service, food and drink that appeal to a wide variety of tastes.

Traditional Korean hospitality is directly associated with the offering of food and drink. The airline has trained a group of talented flight attendants to entertain and amuse passengers. Asiana also provides an unusual "Flying Magic Show" to its passengers in order to break up the monotony of long-haul flights. Primarily on its transpacific and leisure routes, such as Bangkok, Saipan, Guam, and Sydney, customers have the opportunity to enjoy a wonderful after-dinner show of live music and magic. Flight attendants may perform stage tricks or individual hand tricks, making things magically disappear and reappear again. Passengers on certain flights may also be treated to performances by a string quartet, choir, or solos on the violin, saxophone, or flute. All Asiana's aircraft cabins were completely renovated in 1997 to offer the latest enhancements in comfort and convenience.

Additionally, Asiana added Sleeper First Class seats and upgraded overall services in coach, business and first class. The new Sleeper First Class upholds its long-standing commitment to superior quality and comfort. Relaxing in the new sleeper seats that are partitioned and recline a full 180 degrees, with 83 inches of room between seats, is like having your own personal bedroom in the sky. It also provides other individual space comforts, like a private audiovisual system. However, more than the comfort of the seats, you will enjoy their world-class menu, including award-winning wines, supported by charming, skilled and attentive crew. On flights originating from Seoul, First Class customers can request traditional Korean dishes, such as broiled lobster in spicy hot sauce, barbecued beef short ribs (bul-gal-bi), broiled yellow covinar fish, grilled amadai fish, or oxtail soup. These are served with steamed rice and a Korean salad. All such meals are served on a traditional Korean chinaware setting.

In its Premier Business Class, travelers will enjoy more space and comfort with 50 inches between seats. The spacious seat design provides exceptional comfort for working or resting and features a 135 degree recline and comfortable foot and leg rests. The new configurations will give the existing cabin added space as the number of business-class seats was reduced from 36 to 32. Travelers will also be treated to a delectable selection of fine cuisine and a complete wine and cocktail list.

Premium Coach Class has been redesigned, and the airline added some special features such as adjustable headrests. The airline provides a very pleasant, flexible meal service in all three classes. Upon request, passengers may vary the time they eat and when they would like to have their meals prepared.

Asiana also has a wedding dress service, this service is especially popular among the newly weds flying to honeymooning paradises such as Guam, Saipan, Sydney, etc. The Asiana check-in counters will keep the wedding dresses clean and safe until customers return from their honeymoons. The wedding dress service is available for all international passengers.

Asiana Airlines serves their First Class travelers, elite level frequent flyers, and VIP's with quality service that is customized according to each individual's preference, taste, and needs. By maintaining and updating its valued customers' service preferences, Asiana flight attendants know in advance who, what and how to serve its customers in order to provide utmost service and comfort during the flight. Information comprises such detailed facts as preferred conversation topics, reading materials, movies, as well as preferred seats, food, and wines! Furthermore, by delivering customer information to connecting flight crew, a "seamless" service is experienced from the beginning to the end of the trip.

Asiana's superior services, distinguished by an attention to details, special needs and individual tastes, shows why the airline is known as the "Jewel of Asia", but it is the warmth, hospitality, and sincerity of its crews that makes the ultimate difference.

AUSTRIAN AIRLINES
National airline group operating scheduled services to 123 destinations in 68 countries on all five continents. You can book with confidence. The airline is a partner in the Star Alliance, it has gone through some difficult years during its membership in Swissair's Qualiflyer alliance, but is now re-emerging with renewed strength. Food and wines are excellent. Occasionally a few more smiles would be welcome, but comfort standards are high, and schedule-keeping is good. Austrian Airlines has put armed sky marshals on all its flights between Vienna and North America. Austrian was the great European winner in the "Airline 2001" competition in the German-language business magazine "Capital". Lauda Air and Austrian Airlines took first and second place respectively in the overall ranking.

AVIANCA
Colombia's flag-carrier operates international scheduled services to Europe, USA, Caribbean and Latin American destinations. It also operates domestic and charter flights. The airline recently merged with Aces Columbia, Colombia's second largest airline serving 37 destinations, to form Aces Avianca. Avianca, Aces Colombia and SAM Colombia are members of the LatinPass frequent-flyer program. Passengers intending to use this airline are advised to proceed with caution. It can be a bargain and the crews are usually friendly, but even at its best, it's not memorable and time performance is poor. As one observer puts it, in order to use this airline you really have to be motivated to reach your destination.
