NORTHWEST
AIRLINES
The world's ninth-largest airline, founded in 1929,
serving international and domestic destinations. With
its affiliate airlines, mainly KLM, this is extended
to more than 500 cities in over 100 countries
throughout Asia, Africa, the Americas, Europe and the
Middle East.
Northwest Airlines has
also pioneered the concept of global alliances.
Setting a standard followed by many in the industry,
Northwest Airlines made worldwide travel a virtually
stress-free process. The airline is very "wired". A
true e-pioneer, Northwest became the first major
airline to deploy compact self-service kiosks which
enable E-Ticket customers to obtain boarding passes,
make current-day flight or seat changes, obtain
WorldPerks Gold upgrades, and at some kiosks check
their bags all from one easy location. Northwest
Airline's Web site provides convenient travel content
including online booking and electronic ticketing. At
gates serving international flights, new
automated-boarding control devices help cut boarding
times by as much as 30 percent. A newly integrated
Aircraft Maintenance System provides maintenance
mechanics with better detail to assign and track
maintenance projects. Northwest is the first airline
to use a remote control visual inspection system that
peers inside aircraft engines and transmits data to
Northwest Airline's technical staff.
World Business Class,
available on all international flights of Northwest
Airlines and KLM, invites passengers to experience
spacious seat design, digital audio systems with state
of the art headsets, and an exceptional dining
experience. It all adds up to ample personal space and
maximum comfort. World Business Class is available on
intercontinental flights using Northwest 747 or DC-10
aircraft or KLM 747 or MD-11 aircraft. The seats with
60in/152cm of pitch provide ample space for
relaxation, reclining to 150 degrees.
World Business Class
serves a varied cuisine, with large portions and
multiple entree choices, including Asian meal options
on transpacific flights. The airline offers "Sky
Break" baskets with fresh fruit, cheese, crackers and
other light snacks. Food & Wine magazine, known
for its dedication to discovering the world's most
exciting wines, will be sharing its expertise with
Northwest to select an impressive assortment of wines
and champagne. Northwest offers a separate wine list
for all international World Business Class customers.
This newly created, full color wine list will feature
all wines currently in the Northwest Airlines Wine
Cellar, including labels and tasting notes.
The airline has a
First Class on its domestic flights, which is a very
average Business Class service, and its Economy Class
service is very average indeed.
The airline has
ConnectFirst, an exclusive package of perks designed
to give passengers extra rewards when they connect on
qualifying domestic flights through Detroit,
Minneapolis/St. Paul or Memphis on Northwest Airlines.
ConnectFirst offers both a free upgrade to First Class
and 1,000 WorldPerks Bonus Miles roundtrip for the
cost of a full Coach fare ticket. Some restrictions
apply.
Reviews about
Northwest vary, fans say it's on the upswing and is
the industry's most improved, but the fact that
punsters still call it Northworst is evidence of
spotty performance. At its best it's on time and
pleasant, earning kudos for its generous
frequent-flier program, good movie selection and best
routes to Asia. But the domestic network isn't as
well-liked, nor are sudden schedule changes, cramped
seats and service that can be below par. "Trying hard
but needs to improve" sums it up.
