Dubai will host the Global Travel & Tourism
Summit, taking place April 20-22, 2008, according
to the World Travel & Tourism Council. At the
launch, His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed al
Maktoum, president of the Dubai Department of Civil
Aviation and chairman and CEO of Emirates Airlines,
and Geoffrey Kent, chairman of WTTC and chairman and
CEO of Abercrombie & Kent, signed a partnership to
guide the development of the summit, along with the
Dubai government, the WTTC and the Jumeirah and
Nakheel companies. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed welcomed the
WTTC and its members to Dubai and expressed his vision
for working together with international travel and
tourism leaders to host the conference, which, he
said, would be a forum to shape the future of the

The Hawaii Visitors
and Convention Bureau has announced a campaign asking
locals to distribute their "talking story" messages
through a partnership with TurnHere, an online video
solutions platform. The initiative showcases seven
GoHawaii videos featuring Hawaii's people sharing
stories of the islands and the experiences that await
visitors. TurnHere has built a YouTube channel for the
videos, a GoHawaii travel blog and is loading the
videos into all major search engines. Jay Talwar,
senior vice president of marketing for the HCVB, notes
that the organization has three legs to its marketing
strategy: to sell the natural beauty of the islands,
to promote the diversity of experiences on the islands
and to showcase the aloha spirit of the people of

Bombardier
Bombardier
Transportation announced that its Chinese joint
venture, Bombardier Sifang Power (Qingdao)
Transportation Ltd. (BSP), has received an order for
40, 16-car, high-speed trainsets (640 cars) from the
Chinese Ministry of Railways (MOR). The order is
valued at approximately 1 billion euros ($1.5 billion
US) with Bombardier's share valued at approximately
413 million euros ($596 million US). BSP is a joint
venture between Bombardier Transportation, Power
Corporation of Canada and China South Locomotive and
Rolling Stock Industry (Group) Corporation.
Bombardier
Transportation announced it has received a contract to
supply fleet operations services for the Greater
Toronto Transit Authority (GO Transit) commuter rail
system serving the city of Toronto and surrounding
regions. The five-year contract, valued at an
estimated 95 million euros ($140 million US, $130
million CDN), includes options for up to 15 additional
years. Should GO Transit exercise all available
options, the contract could reach an estimated value
of 353 million euros ($519 million US, $483 million
CDN).

Trains
Virgin Trains will
introduce a mobile phone easy pay cashless option for
customers using pay and display car parks at some of
its West Coast stations. Trials have taken place for
the new payment option at Rugby and Stafford stations
and will operate at Stoke-on-Trent, Macclesfield,
Runcorn, Warrington Bank Quay, Wigan North Western,
Preston, Lancaster, Oxenholme, Penrith and Carlisle
from December. A text message to the service provider
detailing the car park identification code, vehicle
registration number and the number of days required to
park. However, each registration incurs a transaction
cost of 30p to cover operating costs.using the web and
receive receipts by text or printed statement. Virgin
is looking into a partnership with National Car Parks
with a view to improving car park management and

Mandarin Oriental
Hotel Group will manage a luxury resort and branded
Residences at Mandarin Oriental in Marbella, Spain,
slated to open in 2010. The company has now announced
two hotels in Spain, and has a total of nine
properties open or under development in Europe and
North Africa. The Mandarin Oriental, Marbella will be
located within a tranquil and protected environmental
area with stunning views of the Mediterranean, the
Rock of Gibraltar and the Moroccan coastline. The
153-room property is a short drive from the historic
city center of Marbella and the stylish resort of
Puerto Banus. The development will include 19 spacious
villas and 61 residential apartments named the
Residences at Mandarin Oriental, providing a unique
opportunity for ownership along the Andalusian coast.

The Broadmoor in
Colorado Springs has introduced a travel agent section
on its web site, the first time the resort has
dedicated part of the site to the agency community.
Agents using the Broadmoor web site can find contact
information, special agent rates and a new "Honored
Agent" program. The travel agent section also has an
enrollment area, a redemption area and a page that
allows agents to send an amenity to their clients who

The
Pierre
The Pierre, a landmark
luxury hotel on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan next to
Central Park, will undergo its second phase of
renovations starting January 1, according to owner Taj
Hotels. The second phase includes upgrades and
renovations to all 200 guest rooms, as well as to the
corridors, public areas, Cafe Pierre and the bar. All
banquet spaces on the second floor will remain open
and fully staffed during the project, though the hotel
will cease taking guest reservations on December 30,
with guest rooms and the restaurant closed as of noon
on December 31. The hotel will fully reopen in early
2009 and will be taking reservations for the renovated

Dominica's main
tourist areas have not been damaged by tropical storm
Noel, according to an announcement by the
Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism. All hotels are
functioning as usual and no foreign tourists were
affected. A meteorology report from the National
Direction of Meteorology states that Noel had no
impact in the provinces of La Romana, La Altagracia
and Samana. The precipitation that these provinces
experienced was normal, so they were not considered a

Hyatt Regency Monterey
in northern California will soon reach another
milestone in an extensive $45 million, three-phase
transformation. The renovation began last year with
the complete redesign of the lobby, lounge and
restaurant. It currently encompasses the makeover of
all guest rooms and suites and the hotel projects
January 8, 2008, as the date when only renovated rooms
will be available to guests. By the end of May 2008,
the renovations to all 575 guest rooms, including 32
suites, will be finished. Guest room furnishings
include Hyatt's signature Grand Beds, 32-inch plasma
high-definition TVs with On-Command video system and
Internet capability, alarm clocks with iPod docks,
cordless phones, and wireless Internet access. Each
guest room will have a work area and coffee makers
