AeroMexico will
begin four weekly services from Ft. Lauderdale to Mexico
City July 17 2003.
Air Littoral filed for the equivalent of Chapter
11 bankruptcy protection late last week. However, the
French carrier said the Wexford group, with "European
partners," is interested in buying the airline. The
European partners are necessary to resolve effective
ownership and control limitations. Wexford also controls
Chautauqua Airlines.
AirTran Airways will launch new daily nonstop
service between Baltimore/Washington International
Airport and Dallas/Ft. Worth Nov. 19 2003.
AirTran Airways confirmed that it will launch
three daily nonstop flights between Reagan Washington
National Airport and Atlanta and one daily nonstop
service between Reagan National and both Ft. Lauderdale
and Ft. Myers Oct. 23 2003. The move comes after the
carrier was awarded slots at Reagan National earlier this
month.
AirTran also will launch a daily nonstop flight
between Atlanta and San Francisco Nov. 12 and will add a
second nonstop flight between the cities March 4 that
will operate five times per week. AirTran Airways
effective Nov. 4 will add a second daily flight between
Philadelphia and Tampa and launch one daily nonstop
between Philadelphia and Ft. Myers. All will be operated
using 717s.
America West Airlines will launch one daily
nonstop flight between Phoenix and San Jose, Costa Rica,
Dec. 1 2003 using an A319 in a two-class
configuration.
American Airlines will launch its first codeshare
flights with oneworld partner British Airways Sept. 17
2003 from London Heathrow to destinations in Europe,
Asia, Africa and the Middle East. BA said earlier this
week that it would begin placing its code on AA's
services on the same day. American and BA will not
codeshare on each other's North Atlantic flights to
London, as mandated by the US Dept. of Transportation,
but AA will add its flight numbers on BA's daily nonstop
services between New York JFK and Manchester. BA will do
the same on AA's flights from Chicago O'Hare to
Manchester and Glasgow. In total, AA will offer codeshare
service on BA to up to 110 destinations while BA will
codeshare on AA flights to 187 cities in the US, Mexico,
Caribbean and Latin America.
American Airlines revised its policy concerning
changes to nonrefundable tickets. Effective immediately,
customers with nonrefundable tickets that allow changes
will have a full year from the date the original ticket
was issued to reschedule without losing the value of the
ticket provided that they cancel their reservations prior
to the scheduled departure time. AA's previous policy
required customers with nonrefundable tickets not only to
cancel but also to rebook a new flight and have the
ticket reissued no later than the originally scheduled
departure date.
ATA Airlines will add a fourth daily flight
between Reagan Washington National Airport and Chicago
Midway Oct. 16 2003. The airline will add a sixth daily
flight between Minneapolis/St. Paul and Midway on the
same day.
British Airways will launch its first set of
codeshare flights with oneworld partner American Airlines
Sept. 17 2003 to destinations in the US, Canada, Latin
America and the Caribbean. The codeshare routes will be
introduced in phases and the first 12 cities include
Raleigh-Durham, Nashville, Cincinnati, Indianapolis,
Mineapolis/St. Paul, Pittsburgh, New Orleans, San Antonio
and Panama City.
British Airways CitiExpress will launch new RJ100
routes Oct. 26 2003 from London City Airport to Edinburgh
and Geneva while dropping LCY service to Glasgow.
Delta Air Lines introduced a redesign of its
facilities at Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International
Airport. New features include new employee roles such as
Lobby Assist Agents and Service Excellence Coordinators,
eight additional self-service kiosks and eight new Delta
Direct phones, which provide customers with access to
dedicated reservations representatives. The carrier has
made similar changes at 47 airports.
Atlantic Southeast Airlines, a Delta Connection
carrier, will launch a sixth daily nonstop flight
between Wilmington, N.C., and Atlanta Oct. 1 2003.
Delta Connection carrier Comair will add its 11th
daily nonstop service between Cincinnati and Louisville
Oct. 1. On the same date Comair will launch Saturday
services between Cincinnati and both Huntsville and
Sarasota. All new flights will be operated with CRJs.
Delta Connection carrier Atlantic Southeast Airlines
began two daily nonstop services between Fredericton,
N.B., and Boston using 328JETs.
Estonian Air, responding to rising demand, will
upgrade its Tallinn-Kiev operation with a 737-500 until
Oct. 24 2003 on Fridays but will continue to operate the
route with an F50 on Mondays and Wednesdays. From the
start of the winter timetable at the end of Oct., all of
the carrier's regular and charter flights will be served
with four 737-500s. Estonian launched its 10th scheduled
route Aug. 12 to Oslo and also adds Berlin this
month.
European Air Express will serve with ATR 42s from
Sept. 1 2003 the Bremen-London Gatwick route that British
Airways is giving up. The route, which reverts Nov. 8 to
Germania, will be operated twice daily on weekdays and
once each on Saturdays and Sundays by EAE.
Qantas began a trial of a new customer service
initiative, Qantas Voice, which uses speech recognition
technology to manage telephone inquiries. The trial
involves the airline's frequent-flier members seeking
points balances and booking domestic redemption seats
during business hours.
