CATHAY PACIFIC
AIRWAYS
First Class
Johannesburg to Hong
Kong
Pre-departure canapé: Flowerette of smoked
salmon with chopped vegetable salad and cream. "Cathay
always serves a pre-departure snack in first class.
This was nice way to start a wonderful flight."
Breakfast: A plate of fresh fruit was offered to begin
breakfast. "Firm and fresh. After a nice six hour
sleep, it was tasty." Beef and oysters with mushrooms
over and under noodles followed. "While kind of an
interesting breakfast choice for a westerner, it was
very good. They could have left off the noodles on top
which had the consistency of a hockey puck."
Mid-flight snack: Noodle soup of shrimp, mushrooms,
tofu and vegetables. "This soup tasted fresh and
warmed my tummy."
Dinner: "The appetizer was Caviar and smoked salmon
with creme fraiche and lemon. The caviar was
delicious, the salmon was also wonderful. It's a great
way to start a meal! Braised duck with rice, bok choy
and carrots. The duck was tender and flavorful. The
crust wrapped beef main course with potatoes and
vegetables. While the meat was tender and delicious,
the crust was a little soggy. Nearing the end of the
meal, we were offered a tray of about 8 cheese plus
crackers and fruit/veggies. I could hardly get
anything in me!"
Economy Class
Hong Kong to
Indonesia
"This is probably old news to you air-food
professionals but I found it a scream. Days later, in
Tokyo, I found a single hotel amenity bottle on a tray
in my hotel bathroom. I suppose it was shampoo, but it
was labelled simply, liquid!."

vanilla ice cream sandwich dessert which came
afterwards."

sandwiches were served for deserts.

Fresh fruit and Haagen Dasz Ice cream. Delicious ice

CONTINENTAL
AIRLINES
Business Class
Newark to Honolulu
Snack and Refreshment: Fresh Seasonal Fruit,
Three-mushroom pizza accompanied by marinated olives,
Chocolate. "Offered about 40 minutes out of HNL, this
was a good pizza by airline standards (not mine), with
a nice, flaky crust, not-too-salty cheese, and fresh
fruit that evidently survived nine hours of a
deep-freeze. By this time it was past 10pm Newark
time, so quite a few people declined this choice even
though time at our local position was around 4:00
Hawaii time. A good ending to a delicious in-flight
experience."
Lunch: First course, "Warm roasted nuts served with
your preferred cocktail or beverage. "You really can't
screw this up, so I thought it was fine. Nice way to
start a great flight to paradise." Second course.
Chilled Shrimp with fresh dill and cocktail sauce.
"Decent shrimp, basic cocktail sauce, not half bad."
Third course. Salad of Fresh Seasonal Greens including
Boston Lettuce and hearts of palm, with cucumber,
tomato, and Kalamata olives. Offered with your choice
of La Flora Italian herb vinaigrette or Thousand
Island dressing. Drink: 7-Up "Herb vinaigrette
dressing was good, good combination, tasty salad.
Served in a massive bowl, made me wonder if there
would be room for the main course. "Mark Alexander
Country Fresh Vanilla Ice Cream offered with your
choice of topping. "Couldn't go wrong with this one,
vanilla ice cream with a strawberry topping, whipped
cream, and the obligatory cherry. By this time I was
almost ready to burst, and we had covered close to 2
hours of flying time in a 9.5 hour flight."
Dinner: Grilled Sterling Silver Rib-eye steak accented
by Maitre d'hotel butter and rosemary, offered with a
tian of grilled vegetables, Risotto cake with wild
mushrooms and sun-dried tomato, Roasted mushroom and
Shallot Ragout with Port wine sauce with a glass of
Bertani Pinot Grigio "This was probably the best meal
I've had in an airplane. The steak, though slightly
overcooked, was tender and juicy, the vegetables were
fine, the risotto cake was delicious, and the sauce
accented the meal nicely. Above all, the service which
accompanied the meal was top-notch, providing for
quite a memorable flight experience."
Honolulu to Houston

juice, water
Dinner: Mixed nuts, three boiled shrimp, salad,

wasabi and soy sauce. The main course was the Japanese
choice - a traditional bento box featuring simmered
duck, eel and cucumber, clear soup, tofu with hijiki
and inari, fried eggplant, Chilean sea bass
saikyokaki, shrimp, scallops, chicken, Japanese
pickles, and steamed white rice. "Excellent variety
and presented very elegantly."
CONTINENTAL
AIRLINES
First Class
Houston to San
Francisco
Pre-Breakfast: "For starters before the main course,
it was an assortment of fruits which included grapes,
strawberries, mango, melon, and grapefruit. A pretty
good way to start off breakfast I will say.
Continental spoils me!"
Houston to San Francisco
Breakfast: Scrambled eggs with potatoes, bacon, ham,
sausage links, pastries, and hot biscuits. "A terrific
way to start off the late morning. Once again,
Continental wows my socks off!
Dessert (Post-Breakfast): Freshly backed chocolate
chip cookies with a chilled glass of milk. "A very
nice touch! Gives it a strong "home feeling""
Houston to Ontario
Breakfast: Eggs with cheese, potato cubes, grilled
tomato and Canadian bacon. "It was actually pretty
good, not sure why they do the grilled tomato
though."
Breakfast: Very nice fruit plate to start with a fresh
cinnamon roll. "Good size serving, fast service."
Los Angeles to Newark
Refreshment: Select Cheeses served with grapes and
crackers. "I didn't each much of the cheese, but the
grapes were good, and so were the crackers."
Breakfast: Selected Cereal served with milk,
strawberries, and a banana. "Cereal was beyond
Continental's control, but what they handled was good.
The fruit was fresh, and the bowl was huge. Took about
20 minutes to finish the bowl of corn flakes."
Breakfast: Scrambled Eggs with herbs, accompanied by
Lyonnaise potatoes, grilled smoked pork loin,
chipolata sausage, sautéed mushrooms, and red
and yellow bell peppers. "Airline eggs were quite
edible, but not great, potatoes, mushrooms, and pork
loin made up for it. Sausage was fair, so I only ate
one link. Overall, a pretty good effort for
breakfast."
Breakfast: Fresh Seasonal Fruit, Fruit yoghurt,
assorted breads including warm croissants, crusty
bagels, cinnamon rolls, and muffins freshly baked on
board, with butter and strawberry preserves. "Nice
first course, yoghurt and fruit were tasty, but the
best part were the huge muffins, freshly baked on
board. I chose a blueberry muffin after this photo was
taken, which I thoroughly enjoyed."

Houston to Amsterdam
Dinner: Chicken & Pasta, side salad and shrimp
with ranch dressing, dinner roll with butter, cheese
and crackers, and a brownie for dessert. Drink: Canada
Dry Ginger ale Comments: "The chicken looks tasty but
was actually very bland. The salad was nice and fresh
with the single shrimp being very sweet. The brownie
had a cobbler crumb top to it, but was a little too
sweet. The service was the best part with 3 drink runs
- before, during, and after the meal. I give the
service an 8. Overall satisfactory and filling for an
airline meal."
Honolulu to Los Angeles
Dinner Snack: "Nice-sized turkey sandwich, macaroni
salad (ick), fruit, shortbread cookie, cup of water,
and various condiments. At about 9:30pm, this was
probably all anyone wanted to eat, so it was fine, but
I still would have preferred a hot option."
Orange County, California to Newark
Hot Choice Breakfast: Eggs, Ham, Potatoes, Mixed
Fruit, Bagel and cream cheese, Bran Muffin, Jelly
Drink: Orange Juice (and choice off bar trolley).
"This is Continental Airlines Standard Transcon Hot

Houston to Tokyo Narita Narita
Lunch: What the label said: Organic potatoes, organic
peas, organic corn, organic soy milk, mushrooms (note
that they weren't organic), organic oats, organic
broccoli, organic tomatoes, "baby" lima beans (again,
not organic) sea salt, etc. What it tasted like:
Organic mush loaf. Someone forgot my "organic flavor
injection." I bet they feed this to horses in India. I
made note of my meal preferences when ordering tickets
online months before. By the time we flew to Japan, I
had forgotten about selecting a "Hindu" meal out of
curiosity, I'm about as Hindu as Rush Limbaugh, so
when the flight attendants seemed suspicious or even
amused at serving this meal to a 300lb tattooed freak,
I was slightly embarrassed! "
San Francisco to Newark
Lunch: Chicken, peas & carrots, mashed potatoes,
salad, brownie, roll, cheese/crackers. "Chicken (dark
meat) was fairly tasty and very moist; very much
'tasted like chicken'. Decent gravy but a little
bland. Veggies were a bit too buttery, but pretty much
on par with the peas you'd get from the Green Giant.
Salad was the weakest link, iceberg lettuce was a
little nasty; I felt like I was grazing rather than
eating it."
Newark to Manchester
Dinner: Rubber chicken breast, mashed potatoes,
veggies, roll, salad with dressing, and brownie for
dessert . "I didn't eat the chicken but the rest of it
was pretty edible".
Las Vegas to Houston
Breakfast: "Pack your own meal for these flights.
These 'snacks' could never satisfy average human
being. Bring your own Meal."
