Airport Overview
The airport, currently the third busiest airport in the world,
located southwest of downtown and takes about 30 minutes by taxi.
Many of the major hotels operate shuttle services to and from the
airport and there are also self-drive and limousine rental agencies
that offer more competitive rates than those based in the city.
Hangar Number One, the first building ever constructed at the airport
in 1929 is still in use and is listed on the National Register of
Historic Places. A new US$250 million runway on the south side of the
airport was opened in April 2007 as part of an overall US$333 million
project to improve airfield safety at the airport. A US$723.5 million
renovation project at the Tom Bradley International Terminal started
in February 2007 and is scheduled for completion in March 2010. The
project will add some 45,000 square feet of space in the terminal and
include major interior renovations as well as installation of an
in-line checked-baggage security system and a second boarding gate
for new large aircraft. The services and facilities are very
convenient for travelers and efficient operation; each terminal has a
variety of restaurants, bars, newsstands and shops.
