An Air France
KLM Boeing 747 aircraft on a flight from
Paris skidded off the runway after landing at
Montreal's Trudeau Airport on Tuesday but there
were no injuries or serious damage, police said.
Passengers were taken off the plane by emergency
crews after it overshot the runway and became
stuck in the grass. Operations at the airport
were not seriously affected and planes continued
to land and take off. Aug 27, 2008
American
Airlines asked the US Dept. of
Transportation for permission to delay the start
of its Chicago O'Hare-Beijing service from April
9, 2009, to April 4, 2010. Sep 1,

American
Airlines expects to equip its international
fleet with satellite-based in-flight
connectivity if the carrier's trial of Aircell's
air-to-ground internet service results in
successful domestic fleet-wide equipment. "My
team has been working on connectivity for many,
many years and we've been talking to all the
connectivity providers. If this is very
successful domestically, then we're certainly
going to look at satellite solutions for our
international fleet as well," says American
manager of in-flight communications and
technology Doug Backelin. Aircell is eager to
accommodate American, should the US major make
such a request. The Colorado-based company has
been studying ways to offer an integrated
solution that will allow airlines to offer
in-flight broadband both domestically and
overseas. However, because Aircell's solution is
based on air-to-ground services, an overseas
offering would require partnerships with
satellite communications providers. Aug 27,

Continental
Airlines, following delays on its Boeing 787
introduction, has confirmed that the 180-degree
lie-flat seat for the BusinessFirst cabin on its
long haul aircraft will now be seen initially on
its Boeing 777 fleet that primarily serve
trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific routes.
Installation will begin from autumn 2009 with
the 757s following in 2010. Now a Heathrow
airline, Continental originally planned for the
new seats to be unveiled with the arrival of the
first Boeing 787. The
delay with the Dreamliner program has allowed BE
Aerospace to re-organise its production program
bringing forward the 777
introduction.
Continental
Airlines' new BusinessFirst lie-flat seats
provide more individual storage space for
personal items. Laptop power, headset and USB
plugs are conveniently tucked above the
customer's shoulder. There is additional storage
under the ottoman, on a shelf under the monitor
and on an amenity storage alcove that provides
room for small personal items such as a book or
magazine and a water bottle. Also available at
the seat will be iPod connectivity, allowing
each customer to view their personal videos and
enjoy their music, all while the iPod is
charging.
BusinessFirst
seats on the 787 and 777 aircraft will feature a
15.4" video monitor for customers to enjoy
on-demand movies, music and games. Seats on the
757 aircraft will feature 10.6" monitors.
Electronic "one-touch" controls will enable
passengers to easily move the seats to pre-set
upright, cradle and fully extended sleep
positions. Additional controls will allow for
adjustment tothe seat back, lumbar support and
leg and foot rests to the custom position most
comfortable. Aug 27, 2008

Delta Air
Lines will operate a weekly Nashville-Cancun
route beginning Dec. 20. Aug 25, 2008
US National
Transportation Safety Board said it is
investigating an Aug. 28 incident in which a
Transaero 747-400 and a Delta Air Lines 737-800
"came within zero ft. vertical and 1 min.
lateral separation at an altitude of 33,000 ft.
about 179 mi. north of San Juan, Puerto Rico."
It added that the Transaero 747 "descended
200-300 ft." after receiving a TCAS alert. The
Delta aircraft was en route from New York JFK to
Port of Spain. Sep 1, 2008
Midwest
Airlines said it will complete the rollout
of its two-class Boeing 717 cabin by Oct. 21, at
which point it will offer 40 2-by-2 Signature
seats and 59 redesigned economy seats on each
flight. Passengers paying higher refundable
fares will be assigned a Signature seat at no
charge, or they may reserve a seat "for a modest
fee" when booking or at check-in, Midwest said.
It had planned to offer the service on its MD-80
fleet as well, but in June it decided to ground
those aircraft. Aug 27, 2008

Ottawa-based
Zoom Airlines suspended operations yesterday
and both its Canadian and UK airline
subsidiaries will file for bankruptcy
protection, the low-fare leisure carrier
announced. Founders Hugh Boyle and John Boyle
said in a statement that the airline was
profitable last year but that it could not
overcome soaring fuel prices. Zoom operated a
fleet of five 757s and 767s on transatlantic
routes. The BBC reported that Zoom aircraft were
detained at Glasgow International and Calgary
over the past two days for nonpayment of air
traffic control charges. Aug 29, 2008
