The railways services at UK’s southern network were badly interrupted as railway workers called a five-day strike on Monday. Theresa May, British prime minister has condemned this move.
Since Monday Aug. 8, a large number of trains have been cancelled, following a dispute over plans for train drivers. A spokesperson of Downing Street said that the prime minister has strongly condemned the five-day strike since it is likely to cause misery for the train travellers. He said that the people are disappointed over the fact that the union bosses are ignoring the matter and added that they expect the situation to be normalized very soon.
The RMT union has said that it completely supports the strike and that it has been started for reinforcing safety. A number of one-day strikes has been held by the union ever since April after 393 members have been balloted.
The union also said that it was compelled to call the strike to protest against the inaction of Govia Thameslink. Furthermore, it has also said that the dispute would continue as it did not intend to dealing with the regular chaos on Southern, according to Mick Cash, general secretary of RMT.
It went on to say that it would continue with the strikes as a rebellion against the anxiety of daily passengers who were forced to compromise on safety while commuting in the overcrowded trains.
Charles Horton, chief executive, Govia Thameslink said that the action of RMT was unjustified and apologized for the disruptions on the train services in UK.
Southern is utilized as the main operator for England’s east Surrey regions and also Sussex. From this station, services are available for Buckinghamshire, Kent, Hampshire and London.
Last month, Southern suffered issues with crew availability that led to major delays and cancellations.
The Association of British Commuters and the Campaign for Better Transport had decided to march to the Department for Transport from London Victoria station to deliver a letter.
The letter appeals to Paul Manyard, the new rail minister to listen to the woes of passengers and offer compensation to travellers for causing this inconvenience.
